Hubert Bath: Burmese Dance
#3 from 'A Bowl of Amber: 3 Eastern Sketches' (1925)
-------------------------------------------------
Phillip Sear plays a lively piece by the British composer Hubert Bath, famous for his 'Cornish Rhapsody' from a film score.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hubert Bath (1883-1945) studied composition with Frederick Corder at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Although he wrote light orchestral suites and stage music, he is remembered today for his 1930s film scores, and in particular, for one of his last works, the 'Cornish Rhapsody' for piano and orchestra, which appeared in the 1944 film 'Love Story'. You can read much more about Bath'...

    Phillip, in that video, is that an iPad you are reading the music from? How do you change the pages when you need to? Do you use a pedal with your left foot? I am thinking of biuying a new compuoiter soon, because the current one I'm using is wearing out, I think - it turns off suddenly for no reason occasionally, some keys stick, and the battery is completely dead. I am thinking of getting one of those hybrid laptops which you can use as a normal laptop, but you can also turn it into a tablet by folding the keyboard underneath. The purpose of this is to allow me to use it, in tablet mode, on the piano stand to play from, which you can't really do with a normal laptop. But I will be getting a Windows computer, because everything I do is within that universe, so I wonder whether there is a way of turning pages efficiently with Windows computers - most musicians do seem to use iPads or Macintosh computers. But for all sorts of reasons it is not practical for me to do that.

    • @PSearPianist
      @PSearPianist День назад

      I am indeed using an iPad in that video, and I mostly use a Bluetooth foot pedal to turn pages, although I do have an app (Calypso) that I can program to turn pages automatically when I reach certain bars at a set speed, and sometimes use that for videos, and also accompanying. I have no experience of Windows tablets, but something like a Microsoft Surface Pro ( tinyl.io/B333 ) might meet your needs. I can certainly recommend Mobilesheets as a score reader ( tinyl.io/B330 ). I used to use it on a now-dead Android tablet.

    Looking at the pseudonyms used by Frederic Mullen that you list, I see I have several books of pieces by "Gustave Lind", and I think I have one or two by "Pierre Lascaut" also. He seems to have been omnipresent early in the 20th century.

    • @PSearPianist
      @PSearPianist День назад

      Indeed he was. If you have any books that are not on IMSLP, I would be interested to know. I used to be able to get them from the British Library, but that is only in limited operation at the moment.

    Someone else who plays Frederic Mullen! I first encountered his work in the 1970s, as a result of regularly visiting various second-hand book-shops that also sold music, and I would go through all the music, sometimes taking a couple of hours if there was a lot to go through, and I would pull out anything that looked interesting, and buy it, take it home, and then sight-read through it all, which would take me several hours. I was in Melbourne, Australia, but this music found its way here, despite most of it originating in Britain, Europe, or the U.S. I don't claim I learned it all thoroughly to performing standard, though; but I used to like exploring such music, and I am good at sight-reading, so this was quite a feasible way of getting to know what the music was like. I did eventually find this book of Scènes Romantiques, but that was much later. The first Mullen book I found, back around the mid 1960s, was called "Highways and Byways"; I wonder whether you have that, Phillip. Its four movements are "The Still Woodlands", "The Little Shepherdess", "By the Lych-Gate", and "On the Broad Highway". I used to visit my grandmother every month or two and stay the night, and I would play various things on her piano, and she got to like half a dozen or so pieces, including "On the Broad Highway", so I associate that piece with her, now that she is long gone. It's quite a difficult piece, and I don't think I ever felt quite easy with a few of its more difficult moments. (The others of her favourites that I recall were "Pickin' Cotton" by Dell Wright, "The Little Negro" by Debussy, Impromptu in Gb major by Schubert, Op. 90, D. 899, no. 3, and "The Dreaming Spires" by Alan Richardson. So these all became very familiar to me over some years.) Anyway, a lot of Mullen's work is now on imslp.org, including "Highways and Byways" (but not "Scènes Romantiques").

      @PSearPianist День назад

      Thanks for your interesting reminiscences, Michael. Of course, there is much more of Mullen's music on my channel, appearing under his various pseudonyms. I did download 'Highways and Byways' back in 2013, but I don't seem to have ever played it. You have prompted me to take another look. Incidentally, I did record 'Dreaming Spires' on YT some years ago

    J'adore cette pièce musicale ! au piano cela a une autre allure que celle qu'on entend d'habitude à l'accordéon. Cette danse a encore un certain succès dans le "bal musette". La java a inspiré de nombreux compositeurs, je pense au chanteur compositeur toulousain Claude Nougaro qui a eu beaucoup de succès avec "le jazz et la java".

    • @PSearPianist
      @PSearPianist 6 дней назад

      Merci pour ton commentaire enthousiaste ! Je suis ravi que tu aies apprécié cette interprétation au piano de la java. C'est vrai que ça lui donne une sonorité différente de la version accordéon plus traditionnelle. Tu as raison de mentionner le "bal musette", c'est un bel héritage de la culture populaire française. Et quelle excellente référence à Claude Nougaro ! "Le jazz et la java" est en effet un parfait exemple de la façon dont cette danse continue d'inspirer les artistes. C'est fascinant de voir comment ces styles musicaux évoluent et s'adaptent à travers le temps et les instruments.
